Problem

Church youth groups across India manage 20–80 members on a mix of WhatsApp, Google Sheets, and notebooks. Attendance gets lost on paper, payments are chased over chat with no proof, meeting notes get buried, and there's no role-based access. Existing tools are either too generic (WhatsApp), too manual (Sheets), or too expensive ($7–$33/mo for ChurchTrac) for a volunteer-run community.

Vision

Help every youth group leader run their community like a well-organized team, without needing technical skills or a budget.

Challenges & trade-offs

Building everything alone

Used modern AI tools and managed infrastructure to move fast. Disciplined RICE-based prioritization to focus only on features that mattered.

Email deliverability

Built a custom email queue with retry logic, suppression lists, and unsubscribe compliance to make sure reminders actually land.

Multi-tenant data isolation

Every table is filtered by organization with row-level security so no data ever leaks between groups.

Trust around payments

No money flows through the app, payments happen via UPI or cash and admins approve records, keeping the system transparent and audit-friendly.

Key learnings
  • Win the leader first, if the leader adopts, members follow
  • Free removes all friction; community tools shouldn't have paywalls
  • Documentation is part of the product, the docs page is the #1 onboarding tool
  • Row-level security from day one saved many bugs later
  • Mobile-first is not optional, 90%+ of users access from their phones
Future roadmap
  • Push notifications (web + mobile)
  • Full offline mode with data sync
  • Multi-language support (Malayalam, Hindi, Tamil)
  • Expense receipt photo uploads
  • AI-powered meeting note summaries
Conclusion

ThreadUp shows that one focused builder, with the right priorities and modern tooling, can replace fragmented community workflows with a single product people actually use, no marketing budget required.
